I am a woodworker. Most of you already know this, of course. Many of you also know that I’m a musician. I have been playing drums for 41 years as of this month. I played drums and wrote music for a hard rock/metal band in the ’80s. Today I mostly write and produce music on my Macintosh.
I also produce my own slide shows to promote my woodworking business. And now I am offering that service to you. For a price, of course, but not a big price… not if you’re a member of Design Style Guide, that is.
Here’s the deal: I charge $40 per minute to produce a slide show video for the average guy off the street. The client provides the photos and some notes about style, and maybe some background music or narration. I do the rest.I charge this price because I’d like to have a lot of business. There are plenty of places that can put together a high end product and charge a high end price. What I provide is produced on my Mac. If the client wants me to add a soundtrack of my own composition that adds another $30 per minute to the package.
If you are a member of Design Style Guide you are entitled to the Big DSG Discount Rate of $20 per minute without music, or with music or narration you provide. $8 per minute extra if I compose the background music myself. Just send me an e-mail at jn3@txwifi.com and we’ll get going on your very own, brand new promotional video. It’s just that simple.
Some of your products may have already been featured in one of my slide shows. Here are the two latest ones:
Here’s the second slide show for this year featuring various DSG members’ work. There will be more. I expect to produce between 5 and 10 of these this year, not including the ones I produce exclusively for my own woodworking. Please let me know what you think of this one, and please feel free to contact me about producing one for your own use.
This first slide show is an overview of some of the best finds from various DSG artisans, in the opinion of little ol’ me.
The second slide show is a just a sample of the handmade wooden art produced by little ol’ me in my woodshop.
All music in both slide shows was composed by me on my Mac using Reason software. If you need a slide show put together to show the world your handmade art let me know. I’m sure we can work something out.
Often our longtime members get overlooked. We get new Design Style Guide members and we go out of our way to make them feel welcome, to help them promote their work, and I think we succeed most of the time. But some of our members have been here for a while, quietly working away at their businesses and helping to promote newer members at the same time, and they rarely get the recognition they deserve. And one of the people right there at the top of that list is Pat Parker, of Pat Parker’s Stoneware Pottery.
I haven’t interviewed Pat (though I might do just that) so I don’t know how she got started doing what she does, how long she’s been doing it, how long she plans to do it. I just know how good she is at doing what she does. Pat is a potter, and a gifted, artistic one at that, and I’m always interested in beautiful artwork. When she lists a new pot or bowl or dinner plate I always take a close look because I know I’m in for a visual treat!
Pat Parker inspires me to be a better woodworker. I see her level of commitment to her craft and I raise the level of my game. She inspires me to market my woodworking products to larger audiences… and to market her pottery to my audience. I want my friends on Facebook to see everything she produces. It’s sort of greatness by association. I figure someone out there will see Pat’s stuff and assume I have wonderful taste because I sent them the link.
I like Pat’s work so much I bought some of it. Here are the mugs I purchased last year. My wife and I have hot tea in them every night.
For those of you who get the Etsy Treasury lists every day, thank Pat for compiling and sending them to you. She does this almost every day, and I don’t think thank her often enough.
So, Pat Parker: Thank you very much for all you do for our team, for Etsy, for potters in particular and artists in general. Thanks for inspiring my own work in my woodshop. You are a wonderful asset to DSG, and I am very proud to know you, if only a little bit.

I make sawdust for a living. I have my own woodshop here in Alvarado, Texas, where I build lots of small, useful items: Candle Holders, Bookends, Wine Rests and other pieces of useful art.
The technical term for useful art is "Craft." For years I had trouble with that word because in my mind it had rather cheap implications. However, if that term was good enough for Sam Maloof, it is certainly good enough for me.
I am an artist. I have painted and sculpted, and I was a graphics designer for many years. I have an eye for what works and what doesn't, and I'm not afraid to give my opinions about them. And now you get to read those opinions here.
