Dorm Room Design
School is back in session! For some this is a joyous time of the year. Although we love our children, it is nice to have a little time to ourselves. For others who are dropping their children off at college it can be a little harder. Looking back on my college dorm I cannot believe I shoved all of my belongings into that one tiny room…with a roommate!
I am devoting this article to dorm rooms. That includes everything from the much needed storage and organization to they finishing touches that dress it up and give it personality.
Where do you start? There can’t be too many choices when you talking about a 20’ x 20” space, so utilizing space not only across the room, but also under the bed and above the bed is essential. Everything from under the bed storage containers, closet organizers and shelving which can hang on the wall will add another spot of precious space. So look side to side, then look up and down and don’t miss an inch!
What consists of a good piece of dorm room furniture? Look for compact, functional and cozy items. Anything with a dual purpose gets double points. Think of a futon or fold up chair, which can also be a spot for guests to sleep. If your lucky enough you might even find a loft bed, which allows you to still live in the space below while sleeping in the space above. But one thing to keep in mind, don’t spend a whole lot of money.
So what’s next? Color pattern and personality. I always like to use something as an inspiration, like a piece of artwork or bedding. Start to do a search for one or both of those items. When you find something you love purchase it and begin the decorating process. You can then add store bought drapes, storage items in coordinating colors, pictures and throw pillows. If you plan well enough you might even be able to squeeze in a chair or an ottoman, just to make it feel a little more homey and a little less like a dorm room.
